Everything Peristyle does

Features

Peristyle brings together a feed reader, bookmarks and page archives, on a server of your choice. Here is each space in detail. To learn how to use them, see the user guide.

Reader

The reader gathers the articles of the sites you follow, with no advertising and no imposed ranking.

Following sites

  • Subscribe with the address of a site or feed: RSS 2.0, RSS 1.0, Atom, JSON Feed and YouTube channels are detected automatically.
  • Tolerant reading of imperfect feeds: unusual dates, encodings, HTML entities.
  • Folders, custom titles and unread counts.
  • Background refresh, which avoids downloading what has not changed and spaces out attempts after a failure.
  • A Failing feeds page to retry or change the address, with automatic disabling after a configurable delay.

Reading

  • Three layouts: List (excerpt and thumbnail), Titles only or Cards, per user, per folder or per feed.
  • Full article: the readable version of a truncated article, on demand or automatically for a feed.
  • Podcasts and videos played inside Peristyle. YouTube is only contacted when you click a video.
  • Read or unread, starred articles, “mark all as read” and complete keyboard reading.
  • Links to other sites open in a new tab, or in the same one if you prefer.

Importing and keeping

  • OPML import in the background, with a preview to choose feeds per folder, and export whole or per folder.
  • Old articles are deleted after a configurable time. Starred articles are always kept.

Bookmarks

A bookmark keeps a link for later, with what you need to find it again.

  • Add by address: title, description, image and icon are read from the page and kept on your instance.
  • Nested collections, tags, favorites and notes.
  • Save straight from a reader article, with a warning if the link is already saved.
  • Bulk operations: select, move, tag, mark as favorite, delete, archive. Drag and drop to a collection.
  • Regular link checks, weekly by default, and a Broken links view.
  • Import from Firefox, Chrome and Edge (HTML), Raindrop and Pocket (HTML or CSV), with a preview. Export as HTML or CSV, whole or per collection.

Archives

An archive keeps a full copy of the page, readable even if the original disappears.

  • A readable version and the original HTML, stored on your disks.
  • Created from an address, a reader article or a bookmark.
  • Downloaded in the background, and resumed after a restart.
  • Collections, tags, favorites and notes of their own.
  • A quota per account, 1,024 MB by default, configurable or unlimited.

Accounts and administration

One instance is shared between several accounts, a family or a small team. Everyone keeps their own reading, bookmarks and archives.

  • Local accounts: no outside identity provider. The first account administers the instance.
  • Open or closed registration, and single-use invitations.
  • A feed followed by several accounts is downloaded only once.
  • Dashboard, account management, server settings, e-mail, extensions and space used, per category and per user.
  • Optional e-mail for forgotten passwords, address confirmation and invitations, written in the recipient’s language.
  • API tokens, one per client, revocable at any time.

Privacy and security

  • No third-party service: fonts, icons and scripts are served by your instance, with no analytics.
  • Image proxy, on by default: the original sites do not see readers’ IP addresses.
  • HTML from outside is cleaned before it is stored, and a strict security policy forbids inline scripts.
  • Feeds on the local network are blocked by default.
  • Every query is filtered by user: nobody sees what they do not follow.

Customisation

  • Languages: French and English, and others by dropping a file, without rebuilding the image.
  • Themes: system, light, dark, or an installed theme, chosen by each user.
  • Extensions: podcasts, automatic full article, YouTube videos, slideshow for gallery pages. A dropped extension only loads with an administrator’s approval.

Help

  • This website is served by every instance, without Internet access, and always matches its version.
  • The Help entry in the sidebar, the ? key for shortcuts and help buttons on the pages that need them.
  • A welcome card for new accounts, and the What’s new page with each version.
